Pre + After Tan Care

Prep

  • Showering should be completed 4+ hours prior to your tan. Be sure to exfoliate your skin and remove any unwanted hair.
    • If you must shower within the 4-hour window, end your shower by running cold water to close up your pores.
    • It is best to shave with a razor that does not contain a moisture strip. It is best to exfoliate with an exfoliating mitt, not a loofah or washcloth.
  • Avoid bar soaps or cream-based body washes, they are known to leave residue on the skin (specifically Dove & Nivea). Any gel-based body wash is best.
  • Tanning should always be the last beauty treatment on the schedule. This includes facials, massages, mani/pedis, etc. The products used during these treatments create barriers on the skin that negatively impact your tan.
    • Complete all waxing at least 48 hours prior to your tan.
  • After your pre-appointment shower, forgo applying any lotions, oils, makeup, creams, etc. Applying any of these to the skin will create a barrier that your tan will not adhere to.
  • Wear dark, loose-fitted clothing with open-toe sandals to your appointment.

After Care

Before Shower:

  • Do not sweat or get wet. This means no working out, no lotions, liquid foundations, creams, etc. on the skin until after your initial rinse.
  • No touching!
  • Do not let your pets lick you.
  • Your palms may stain if you touch yourself while your tan is developing.
  • Wearing long sleeves & pants can help with tan transfer.

Future Showers:

  • It is best to continue avoiding loofahs and washcloths, except in needed areas such as pits & privates.
Gel-based, unscented body wash is best.
  • Wait as long as possible to exfoliate and shave.
  • Feel free to begin using DHA-enhancing products after day three of your tan.

First Rinse:

  • Do not use soap or other products.
  • Do not use loofahs or washcloths, use your hands to guide your bronzer off.
  • Use lukewarm water.
  • Do not urinate in the shower, the ammonium can cause streaks!
  • Air dry or pat dry with your towel, do not rub yourself dry.

Future Care:

  • Stay hydrated - the more hydrated your skin is, the longer your tan will last.
  • Stay moisturized - the more moisturized your skin is, the longer your tan will last.
  • Once your tan has been applied for 24 hours, I recommend moisturizing twice/day. The best moisturizer is free of mineral oil & artificial fragrance.
  • Avoid any oil-based products, as they strip your tan. Spray sunscreen & shaving cream specifically are big no-no’s!
  • Avoid long periods of time in warm water including hot tubs, steam showers, etc. Avoid swimming in the pool or ocean for long periods of time. Your tan will not last as long if you engage in these activities.
  • Hold off on spa or beauty treatments as long as possible, as your tan may become uneven due to soaking in acetone, water, oils, lotions, exfoliation, etc.
